13.1. Experimental x86 Linux support for the IDERI note client

From version 2.2.512 on, the IDERI note client offers experimental support for operation on x86-Linux under Wine. However, for the operation of the IDERI note client under Wine, a number of peculiarities have to be considered. First and foremost, the IDERI note client only runs on Linux clients that have been joined to an AD domain via the winbind client from the Samba project. An IDERI note client running under Wine also cannot connect to an IDERI note server via the named pipes protocol sequence. The only way for an IDERI note client running under Wine to connect to its IDERI note server is via a dedicated TCP port. Therefore, an IDERI note server that has to accept connections from Linux clients, has to be configured in such a way, that it offers a dedicated TCP port for its client interface in addition to named pipes. Another limitation of an IDERI note client running under Wine is that NTLM is the only available authentication protocol because Wine currently lacks the implementation of a Kerberos protocol provider.

Note that for this exact reason, clients with version number 3.0 or higher running under Wine are currently not supported, as version 3.0 has introduced support for addressing Active Directory® computer objects and therefore installs a service running under the builtin NetworkService account. Users running the IDERI note client under Wine should therefore install the latest version of the 2.x version series. Note that such an older client version cannot receive messages that are destined to computer objects or to both user and computer objects if the IDERI note server is running in professional licensing mode.

A future release of the IDERI note client and the IDERI note service will reintroduce support for the professional licensing mode of IDERI note with clients running under Wine.

In addition, the network communication of an IDERI note client with its IDERI note server is not signed and lacks the message integrity mechanisms that an IDERI note client running under Windows® uses. Another limitation of an IDERI note client running under Wine is the missing RPC server functionality that the IDERI note client employs in order to allow for instant “push” notification of alert messages from within the IDERI note administrator. An IDERI note client running under Wine is also unable to determine its server name from Active Directory® via a service connection point query. It is therefore inevitable for an IDERI note client running under Wine to get server name and TCP port information passed via the command line.
